 Chapter Twenty-Two 

Monday December 22

J azmine had gone back to school and for once we didn’t have a bunch of curious kids hanging around and possibly getting in trouble. If there was a killer around, better they shouldn’t be here. But no doubt Jazmine had shared this exciting news with her friends, and they would be back. I would have to make sure they spent their time interviewing the residents with the aim of writing their life stories, and not interviewing them with the aim of accusing them of murder.

Hal had called and arranged to meet for coffee, and I was undecided whether that was a good thing or not. On one hand, he was going to cross-examine me and try to stop me doing anything he thought I shouldn’t. On the other hand, well, he was Hal and I had feelings for him, at least when he wasn’t getting me mad.

But even though I knew he was doing it because he cared for me, I didn’t want to stop investigating.

Now what should I do?

I didn’t know who had murdered Judith, but I assumed it had to be someone at the Menorah, and I needed to start somewhere. So I would start with Byron. Why him? I had my reasons. The majority of residents were too frail to do anything like conk Judith over the head, so it would have to be a person in good shape. Although Byron was handicapped, he was strong enough to maneuver his wheelchair, and he could certainly handle a branch and a rock.

Also, he had a large car, a kind of van, that his motorized wheelchair fit into. And it was black. I didn’t think it was a van that hit us, but maybe I was wrong.

Besides that, his name was on Judith’s list, along with a few undecipherable others.

And most of all, I just had a gut feeling. I didn’t trust him. He was nasty along with his friend Joe, and unlike Joe, he was smart. I thought Byron was a better target than Joe, because Joe was just a boor and he was usually too enamored of his whiskey to think straight. Byron was an intelligent guy.

Why did he do it, if indeed he did? I didn’t know, but it had to be linked with Judith’s detective efforts in the Menorah. What was she investigating? That was the first thing I would have to find out.

Time was pressing. The police were going to get wise sooner or later to Sophie’s disappearance, which coincided with Judith’s death, and they would draw conclusions.

Out of prudence, I took the long way around from the elevator, staying as far away as I could from the ladies on the sofas who were enjoying their pre-lunch gossip. Avoid them? Yeah, right. They had eyes in the backs of their heads when it came to potential news.

“Yoo hoo! Where are you going, Ellie? Have you heard that Sophie is back? I bet she killed that Judith woman!” called out Bertha.
